| Living In Mendocino |
|
Mendocino is a special place. When I first visited in 1968 I was immediately attracted to the atmosphere of clean air, uncomplicated living, and the extraordinary beauty of the area. There was an air of mystery when you walked around the town. I found small cafes and shops tucked into weathered building and water towers. Everything was intriguing and there was a feeling of secrecy and innocence.
The town of Mendocino is situated on a peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. Big River and its estuary borders the south entrance into town and Highway 1 is on the east side. In 1974 the Mendocino Headlands State Park was established which forever protects this ocean front land that envelops the town. At the same time Mendocino was declared a Historically Protected Town. The Victorian Era buildings are a striking contrast to the dramatic, rugged coastline, the beauty of the ocean and the back drop of the lush forest. Although Mendocino has grown and changed over the last 30 years, the essence of a small village is still there along with open fields sprouting with Echium, wild raddish, poppies, and pink Amaryllis. The beauty of the setting and supportive environment is an inspiration to artists, musicians and small business entrepreneurs who flourish and benefit from living here. It is why we came here and why we call Mendocino our home. Whether you take a stroll down Main Street and check out the small shops, walk on the beach or the Headlands, or dine at a quaint restaurant, you will immediately sense that Mendocino is a unique and special place. |
